The Lakeland Fire Department in Brief:
The Lakeland Fire Department (LFD) was established as a career-department in 1916. The Lakeland Fire Department has an Insurance Service Office (ISO) Public Protection Classification 1, the highest achievable rating.
The department has seven stations serving approximately 110,000+ people in the City of Lakeland. The department has 178 employees, of which 156 are
emergency response personnel. In 2018, the department responded to over 25,500 service calls in its 84 squaremile response area, which includes the city
limits as well as portions of unincorporated Lakeland.
The department offers a wide range of services which includes heavy rescue, technical rescue, fire prevention, fire code enforcement, fire investigation,
aircraft rescue and firefighting, and in-house fleet maintenance; all in addition to outstanding fire suppression and emergency medical response.
The Lakeland Fire Department is also passionate about being an active participant in its community and consistently giving back through philanthropic efforts
and through non-emergency services like community outreach and preventative public education.
How the Donation Would Help:
The City of Lakeland is growing larger every year, offering many new events and actively growing established ones, for the benefit of its citizens and to help
attract visitors alike. There are over 100 special events per year, many of which LFD attends to provide emergency medical services to its participants. This is
currently made possible through use of the department’s compact, yet aging, all-terrain vehicle (ATV) which is used to provide emergency medical care by weaving in and out of large crowds; something that would be impossible for a traditional rescue truck or
ambulance.
The department’s current all-terrain
vehicle is nearing the end of its life cycle, with equipment failure becoming common. This has made it unreliable to use as the main vehicle for the many special events at which the department has to provide its emergency services. The department would like to purchase a new ATV that can be used for special events, however because the current one was purchased with grants funds, no budgeted dollars are available for its eventual replacement.
Any donated funds from the Lakeland REALTORS® Association Foundation Inc. would be used to purchase a new vehicle. The department believes this would significantly help the department continue to provide the exceptional service for which it is known. This specialized vehicle would allow our Firefighters and Paramedics access to those in need in densely populated areas where traditional apparatus cannot access them. We can get in quickly and transport patients out effectively which impacts their success as patients tremendously.
